Kieron Pollard left his finishing role at MI and David has been widely regarded as the player who would fill that position. Prior to the victory on Sunday, his batting statistics had been largely average. He admitted after the game that it had felt good to help the team win.
David can be heard telling Tilak Varma in a video posted on the IPL website, “This season I have been sitting and watching you and Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) smack the ball around”.
“I’m eager to help the team out and deliver a strong performance. Having your trust on the other end is nice,” he said. “Feeling fantastic. Your running down at the other end makes it even better to have crossed the finish line. I can’t imagine a better feeling”.
”We have various rhythms on some days. Even though you weren’t in your usual rhythm today, you still made some crucial shots”, he noted.
In addition, David made light of the fact that captain Rohit Sharma, who turned 35 on Sunday, hadn’t been able to consistently perform at the plate before the victory over RR.
Saying it was nice to give him a reason to be happy. “We send birthday greetings to our captain, Rohit. We’ve been playing poorly and giving him sleepless nights. But tonight we have something to celebrate for him,” he said.
