IPL 2024: NCA Gives Clearance To KL Rahul; Unlikely To Keep Wickets Initially
KL Rahul Injury Details

KL Rahul has recently received clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to participate in the highly anticipated 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a key player for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). However, his participation might not entail wicketkeeping duties initially, owing to a right quadriceps injury he sustained during the intense battle of the first Test match against England in January.

This injury sidelined him for the remainder of the series, prompting him to seek specialized medical consultation in the United Kingdom before returning to his homeland, India, on March 3, where he commenced further rehabilitation under the guidance of NCA experts.

According to an insider from the esteemed Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rahul is slated to reunite with his LSG teammates on Thursday, March 20, just in time for their eagerly awaited season opener against the formidable Rajasthan Royals scheduled for Monday, March 24, in the historic city of Jaipur.

Despite his clearance, Rahul has been advised by medical professionals to exercise caution, particularly avoiding strenuous squatting, hence limiting his initial involvement to his formidable batting prowess, with the possibility of gradually reintegrating wicketkeeping duties as his recovery progresses.

While the absence of Rahul from behind the stumps may not overly perturb the LSG management, given the presence of seasoned wicketkeeper-batters such as Quinton de Kock and Nicholas Pooran in their ranks, Rahul’s ability to don the gloves remains pivotal to his ambitions of securing a coveted spot in India’s dynamic T20 setup.

With his last appearance in the T20 International arena dating back to the riveting semifinal clash of the 2022 T20 World Cup against England, Rahul faces intense competition for the prized keeper-batter role from the likes of the explosive Rishabh Pant and promising talents like Rinku Singh.

While Rahul’s recent performances may not immediately warrant consideration for a top-three batting slot in the Indian T20 squad, his prospects of assuming a pivotal role as a middle-order keeper-batter largely hinge on a successful IPL campaign.

However, should Rahul opt to concentrate solely on his batting prowess, emerging talents like Rinku Singh could emerge as compelling alternatives, further intensifying the competition alongside the established presence of the dynamic Rishabh Pant, potentially challenging Rahul’s aspirations within the team hierarchy.
