The Mumbai Indians appointed Pandya as their skipper before the season commenced, displacing Rohit Sharma. Despite Pandya’s anticipation of fan backing, he has been met with jeers rather than cheers since the season’s outset.
When questioned about Pandya’s predicament, Ganguly forthrightly attributed the all-rounder’s captaincy to the franchise owners’ decision-making, implying that Pandya was responsible for his own fate. Throughout the campaign, Pandya has encountered hostility from spectators, whether at his former franchise’s home ground, the Gujarat Titans’ stadium in Ahmedabad, or at Mumbai Indians’ home turf, Wankhede Stadium.
He said: “Fans shouldn’t boo Hardik Pandya, it’s not correct. Rohit Sharma is a different class, his performance has been on a different level. But it’s not Hardik’s fault that he has been appointed as captain by the franchise.”
The Mumbai Indians’ lacklustre performance, suffering three consecutive defeats, has only compounded Pandya’s challenges, with some of his captaincy choices failing to yield positive results. Although Ganguly empathizes with Pandya’s plight, he refrained from expressing hope for a turnaround in fortune during the upcoming match against the Delhi Capitals.

Sourav Ganguly also appealed to both fans and pundits to grant Rishabh Pant the opportunity to participate in matches without the burden of contemplating his prospects of rejoining the national squad. When questioned about Pant’s potential selection for the T20 World Cup, Ganguly emphasized the significance of the Delhi captain engaging in several additional matches to acclimate himself to the demanding nature of competitive cricket.
He said: “Rishabh is fully fit. His form has been fantastic. He is keeping and batting well but let him play a few matches more: If the national selectors want him, I should be able to judge in another week.”
Ganguly’s comments underscore the inherent pressures and complexities of leadership in cricket, where individual performances and team outcomes are scrutinized under the relentless gaze of fans and media alike.
