Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma has commenced his training for the forthcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit joined the Mumbai camp on Monday, March 18, and promptly began practising in the nets to find his rhythm.

The right-handed batsman’s most recent appearance was during the five-match Test series against England, in which India emerged victorious with a 4-1 result. Rohit, who was succeeded by Hardik Pandya as MI captain, appeared to be in excellent form in the 30-second video posted by the franchise on different social media platforms.

He executed some exquisite cover drives, advanced down the track on a few occasions, and also executed his favourite pull shot a couple of times.

With no additional burden on his shoulders, Rohit Sharma aims to bat freely and lead Mumbai’s batting from the forefront. The 35-year-old has experienced a couple of disappointing IPL campaigns recently. Last year, he only managed to score 332 runs in 16 matches at an unsatisfactory average of 20.75. In IPL 2022, Rohit’s average dropped to below 20, as he scored just 268 runs in 14 games.

However, he exhibited good form against England, registering two centuries and a fifty. The accomplished batsman aspires to replicate his performance in IPL 2024, which will be followed by the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

“I know he will always have his hand on my shoulder” -Hardik Pandya’s comments on taking over as MI captain from Rohit Sharma

After captaining Gujarat Titans for two seasons, Hardik Pandya was traded back to Mumbai Indians, the team where he started his IPL career. Given his remarkable success as a leader, the all-rounder was also appointed as the captain for the upcoming season.

When questioned about the captaincy switch, Hardik emphasized that there would be no discomfort between him and Rohit. The newly appointed MI captain also emphasized his anticipation of Rohit’s assistance when required.

“Rohit Sharma is Captain of Team India which helps me, what this team has achieved, was achieved under his leadership and I just carry forward. I played my whole career under him and I know he will always have his hand on my shoulder,” Rohit told reporters.

Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2024 journey against the runner-up of the previous year, Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 24th.
