In a heart-wrenching clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during IPL 2025, CSK captain MS Dhoni admitted to his own shortcomings in the team’s narrow two-run loss. The defeat occurred during what could have been CSK’s highest-ever run chase in IPL history. Chasing a challenging total of 213, CSK remained in the hunt throughout the match, largely due to brilliant performances by Ayush Mhatre and Ravindra Jadeja.
However, Dhoni, who scored 12 runs off eight deliveries, failed to finish the game for his team. He was dismissed in the final over at a crucial moment, when CSK needed just 13 runs off three balls. Reflecting on his performance after the game, Dhoni said, “When I went into bat, with the kind of deliveries and the runs needed, I felt I should’ve converted a couple more shots to ease the pressure. I take the blame.”
Brilliant Performances Go in Vain
Despite the loss, young Ayush Mhatre stunned everyone with a composed and aggressive knock of 94 runs off 48 balls. His innings was marked by maturity and calmness far beyond his age. Ravindra Jadeja also played a stellar role, contributing 77 runs off 45 balls and remaining not out till the end. However, the team could not get over the line.
With 22 runs needed off the final eight balls, Dhoni gave fans hope by hitting a six in the penultimate over. But in the last over bowled by Yash Dayal, Dhoni was trapped LBW, leaving the task incomplete. CSK still had a chance when Shivam Dube hit a six after a no-ball, reducing the equation to six runs off three balls. However, Dayal stayed calm under pressure and ensured RCB won the match.
RCB’s Dominant Batting Display
Earlier in the match, RCB put up a massive score of 213, powered by a spectacular performance from Romario Shepherd. The West Indian all-rounder smashed a blazing 53 off just 14 balls, punishing CSK bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana. Top-order contributions from Virat Kohli, who scored 62, and Jacob Bethell, who added 55, laid a solid foundation for RCB’s total. Despite CSK’s spirited chase, RCB’s disciplined bowling in the final over sealed a memorable win.
