IPL 2025: Shubman Gill Breaks Silence After Fiery Clash With Umpires

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill opened up about his emotional outburst during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad. Gill was seen arguing with on-field umpires Kannur Swaroopanand and Virender Sharma over a review decision that involved his close friend and teammate Abhishek Sharma.

The intense exchange caught wide attention, especially as Abhishek tried to calm him down. Later, Gill also had a heated moment with the fourth umpire after being run out, a decision that appeared unclear from the broadcast visuals.

Addressing the incident during the post-match presentation, Gill said, “There was a little bit of a discussion with me and the umpire, sometimes there are so many emotions involved as you give your 110 per cent, there are bound to be some emotions.” He added that emotions often come to the surface when a player is giving their all on the field.

Gujarat Titans’ Top Order Leads from the Front

Shubman Gill highlighted how understanding the nature of tricky pitches has helped Gujarat’s top three—himself, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler—excel this season. These players have consistently contributed the majority of the runs for the team.

Against Hyderabad, Gujarat scored a massive 224/6, with the top order setting the tone. The team played only 22 dot balls in their entire innings, ensuring constant momentum. Gill explained that they didn’t have any specific plan regarding the number of dot balls but focused on maintaining their natural gameplay.

He said, “Didn’t plan that (22 dot balls), the idea was to continue to play like we have. Black soil (pitches), we’ve seen it’s not easy to hit sixes. But the way our top order plays, we know how to keep the scoreboard ticking.”

He also clarified that there was no fixed strategy requiring a top-order player to bat through the innings. “We’ve never had the conversation for one of the top three to always be there at the end. We’re just eager to do our best,” Gill said.

Praise for Teammates and Looking Ahead

Jos Buttler, who scored a quick 64 off 37 balls in the same match, downplayed his own performance and instead praised Sai Sudharsan, who scored 48 off just 23 balls. Buttler said, “I’ve said it a few times, day one watching him in the nets, I was blown away by how good he is.

More importantly, great head on his shoulders.” Gujarat Titans are currently in a strong position on the points table with seven wins and are close to securing a spot in the playoffs. Their next challenge will be against the Mumbai Indians on May 6 at the latter’s home ground.
