New Zealand and Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Trent Boult discussed how much he is enjoying his new role in the team, a position that gained significant attention after his match-winning performance in MI’s dominant victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 23.
With Mumbai securing their fourth straight win in IPL 2025, Boult’s fiery four-wicket haul played a crucial part in dismantling SRH’s batting early. Boult’s figures of 4/26, alongside Deepak Chahar’s 2/12, were key in restricting SRH to a modest total of 143. The total was only achieved thanks to a rescue effort from Heinrich Klaasen and impact sub Abhinav Manohar.
The longer gaps between Boult’s overs highlighted his changing role in MI’s strategy. After being named Player of the Match, Boult explained that although he usually bowls most of his overs early, he is always ready to contribute at any stage when needed.
“I’d love to bowl 4 in a row and let it swing around all the time but that doesn’t always go to plan. As a bowler you have to be ready to go at any stage. Slightly different role from me this year but I am enjoying my time in blue and gold. Looking forward to hopefully contributing more and pushing us further up the table,” Boult said.
“I still love the feeling of competing, taking wickets and getting into battle with some of the best batters in the world. It’s a huge tournament. There are hundreds and thousands of bowlers that would love to be out here doing the job that we’re doing so just not taking that for granted and give it a good crack,” he added
Trent Boult and Rohit Sharma Lead MI to IPL 2025 Victory
Known for his strength in the powerplay, especially during his time with Rajasthan Royals, Trent Boult’s bowling role has evolved this season with Mumbai Indians. In the match against SRH, he bowled two overs in the powerplay, then returned only in the 15th over and again took the final over of the innings.
This new approach has yielded excellent results for both MI and Boult. The 35-year-old has now taken 10 wickets from 9 matches in IPL 2025. Boult’s outstanding performance, paired with Rohit Sharma’s dynamic 70 off 46, guided MI to a comfortable chase, allowing them to rise to third place in the points table and maintain their signature mid-season momentum.
