SRH skipper Pat Cummins has hinted at a possible shift from their aggressive playing style in upcoming matches, following a heavy defeat to Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, April 23. Known for their attacking brand of cricket in 2024, Hyderabad has struggled to replicate that success this season and currently sits 9th on the points table.
In the loss to MI, SRH’s top order collapsed once again, with Heinrich Klaasen and Abhinav Manohar providing some late resistance. While Cummins has previously supported their all-out attack strategy, he acknowledged after the match that a more balanced approach might now be necessary.
He emphasized the need for someone to stabilize the innings in the middle and noted that it’s acceptable to take a few balls to settle in before shifting gears to play more aggressively.
“Yeah, I mean, Abhinav and Klaasy (Klaasen) got us to a good total. But we just didn’t get going. You needed one guy to steady the ship but we kept losing wickets. We have spoken about it before the match. You can build your innings and if you take up balls, you are good enough to catch-up later. We are starting with none for two. You have to assess the pitch,” said Cummins.
“Things haven’t gone our way”: Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins reflected on SRH’s journey, mentioning the thrill of posting 286 in their opening game and the subsequent disappointment of failing to live up to that standard in the following matches. The SRH captain acknowledged that their current approach hasn’t delivered results this season and emphasized the need to adapt going forward.
He stated that the team now plans to evaluate each pitch individually and determine a realistic target based on the conditions.
“I think the difference from the first game was we got 280 and the second game, we got out on a low total. That’s T20 cricket. It hasn’t worked out for us so far.”
“We have got a few away games now. It’s about assessing each wicket. Every wicket looks a bit different. Assess what total will be a good total and try to get there. Some of the discussions will be around that going forward,” said Cummins.
