Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja may have violated a BCCI protocol ahead of Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, but he is unlikely to face any action. According to the guidelines introduced by the BCCI after the Australia tour earlier this year, players must arrive at the ground together.
However, Jadeja chose to reach the venue separately in order to get extra batting practice before resuming his innings. He was unbeaten on 41 overnight, with Shubman Gill still at the crease, and took it upon himself to prepare better against the new ball threat that had troubled India in the previous match.
Focused Preparation for a Stronger Start
Ravindra Jadeja explained that he wanted to face a few extra deliveries in the nets before play resumed on Day 2. “Somewhere I felt that I should go and bat extra because the ball was still new,” he told.
His goal was to get past the initial danger phase and allow the team to settle. “I felt if I can see the new ball off, it would become easy for the rest of the innings. Luckily I could bat till lunch, and then Washy [Washington Sundar] also batted well with Shubman.”
“The more you bat in England, the better it is because you never feel you are set in England. At any time a ball can swing and take your edge or bowl you.” Jadeja’s decision to train early seemed to pay off, as he handled the English attack with composure during the initial session.
A Gritty Knock That Made a Difference
Although Jadeja missed out on a century, falling for 89, his innings played a crucial role in India’s effort to avoid another batting collapse. He was pleased with his contribution, especially on challenging foreign conditions.
“When you contribute with the bat for the team, it feels great, when you are playing outside India, and the team needs you more, it feels good. From 210 for 5, to put together a big partnership to take the team forward, it is a challenge.”
“I took it as a challenge. If you can stick around with the captain and put together a big partnership, it gives you confidence as a cricketer and a batter that in the coming matches also you can contribute,” he added. Jadeja’s approach and mindset reflected his commitment to the team’s success, even if it meant bending the rules slightly for preparation.
