On Day 3 of the second Test between India and England, Shubman Gill suffered a blow while fielding at first slip. The incident happened during Ravindra Jadeja’s over when Harry Brook attempted a forceful shot to a ball pitched outside the off-stump.
The ball came off the bat at great speed, and Gill, stationed close by, had little time to react. It struck him on the top of his head. “Rishabh Pant checked the spot and asked for the physio to enter the field.” Gill appeared in discomfort but after receiving brief medical attention, he resumed fielding without leaving the ground. The moment, especially Pant’s caring gesture, quickly went viral on social media.

England’s Counterattack After Early Setback
India struck early in the morning session when Mohammed Siraj dismissed two key batters in consecutive deliveries. Joe Root was caught down the leg side for 22, followed by Ben Stokes, who fell for a duck after facing a sharply rising delivery. This left England in deep trouble at 84 for five.
However, Jamie Smith and Harry Brook led a remarkable recovery. “Smith smashed a memorable hundred in less than a session and Harry Brook (91 batting off 127) was on course to reach three figures at the break.” They added quick runs and shifted the pressure back onto India’s bowlers.
Smith’s Dominance and India’s Bowling Struggles
India tried to break the partnership with a short-ball strategy, bringing in Prasidh Krishna and placing six fielders on the leg side. But the plan backfired. In one over alone, Smith struck four boundaries and a six, collecting 23 runs. “India persisted it with Krishna, whose following over went for 11.”
By lunch, Krishna had bowled eight overs and conceded 61 runs without taking a wicket. Meanwhile, Smith’s aggressive intent didn’t allow the Indian spinners to settle. He treated Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja with equal disdain, hitting back-to-back boundaries and even clearing the ropes.
“Smith got to his second Test hundred off 80, the third fastest by Englishman, with consecutive fours off Jadeja in the last over before lunch.” At lunch, England were 249 for five, still trailing India’s massive first-innings score of 587 but fighting hard to narrow the gap.
