Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj delivered a standout performance in the first innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, finishing with figures of 6 for 70. After dismissing Zak Crawley (19) late on Day 2, Siraj added five more wickets on Day 3 to put India in a dominant position.
England resumed Day 3 at 77/3, but Siraj struck quickly, removing Joe Root (22) and captain Ben Stokes (0) in back-to-back deliveries, reducing the hosts to 84/5. Although Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*) stitched together a massive 303-run partnership, Siraj returned to wrap up the tail, claiming the final three wickets as England were bowled out for 407.
With this six-wicket haul, Siraj became only the second Indian after Bumrah to claim five-wicket hauls in England, Australia, South Africa, and the West Indies. His earlier spells include 6/15 in Cape Town, 6/60 in Port of Spain, and 5/73 in Brisbane. Jasprit Bumrah has recorded four five-wicket hauls in Australia, along with three each in England and South Africa, and two in the West Indies.
Notably, only two of his 14 five-wicket hauls have come on Indian soil. In the current series, he took 5 for 83 in the first innings of the opening Test at Leeds but went wicketless in the second innings.
Siraj Leads India’s Charge With Six Wickets On Day 3
After ending Day 2 with England at 77/3, India looked to seize control early on Day 3 in Birmingham, and Mohammed Siraj delivered just that. He struck early, dismissing Joe Root with a faint tickle down the leg side to the keeper.
His next delivery was even more impactful, as he sent Ben Stokes back for a golden duck with a sharp short ball that the England skipper edged behind. Following the 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, Siraj came back with the second new ball to dismantle the tail.
He trapped both Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue lbw for ducks with deliveries that left them no chance. Shoaib Bashir, also dismissed for a duck, was bowled after misjudging a ball that followed a nasty blow to the helmet from a bouncer.
