MS Dhoni was the first-ever wicketkeeper captain in the IPL after Chennai Super Kings announced him as the skipper of the side after his early World T20 success. India’s success in the first edition of the T20 World Cup brought about the Indian Premier League and Dhoni became the first-ever wicketkeeper captain. Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist were then chosen to lead IPL teams becoming wicketkeeper captains for their respective franchises.

Meanwhile, ahead of Rajasthan Royals’ season opener against Punjab Kings, Jos Buttler credited MS Dhoni for starting a legacy of wicketkeepers captains in the IPL. The IPL 2021 will see a total of three wicketkeeper captains with Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson giving company to Dhoni. Pant was chosen to lead the side after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for Delhi Capitals. Meanwhile, Samson was chosen as the new captain of the Royals after Steve Smith was released by the franchise. Samson was chosen above Buttler himself as the leader of the side.
