Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels KL Rahul can be groomed as a captain of the Indian cricket team in the future. Gavaskar’s comment in the light of Virat Kohli announcing his decision to step down from the T20 captaincy post after the ICC T20 World Cup later this year.
The Indian skipper took to social media to share a statement informing his decision. He wrote, “After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I’ve decided to step down as the T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.”

India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma is the front-runner to take the T20 captaincy. While there have been many speculations about the probable vice-captain, Sunil Gavaskar feels KL Rahul will be the perfect man for the job.
In an interaction with Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar opined that India can groom KL Rahul as the future captain by appointing him as the deputy now. He said
“It’s a good thing that the BCCI is looking ahead. It’s important to think ahead. If India are looking to groom a new captain, then KL Rahul can be looked at.

Suni Gavaskar also highlighted that KL Rahul has been in good form lately in International cricket. He was India’s second-leading run-getter in the series, with a man of the match in the historic Lord’s test win. Gavaskar said,
“He has performed well. Even now in England, his batting was very good. He has been performing well in IPL and 50-overs cricket as well at the international stage. He can be made vice-captain.”
KL Rahul has the experience of leading a T20 team. He is currently the captain of the Punjab Kings team in the Indian Premier League. Sunil Gavaskar stated that the opening batsman has showcased impressive leadership qualities.
“He has shown very impressive leadership qualities in the IPL. He hasn’t let the burden of captaincy affect his batting. His name can be taken into consideration,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
