India took on New Zealand in a Group B match played at Headingley, Leeds on 13th June 1979. New Zealand captain MG Burgess won the toss and decided to field first. It was a disappointing batting performance by Indian batsmen with Sunil Gavaskar 55, BP Patel 38, Kapil Dev 25, Ghavri 20, India were bowled out for 182 in 55.5 overs.
Chasing the target of 183 runs to win, John Wright and Edgar added 100 runs for the opening wicket. Edgar 84* and Turner 42* helped New Zealand register a thumping 8 wicket win with 18 balls to spare.
