Both met each other again in Group A match on 31st October 1987 played at VCA Stadium, Nagpur. The match was played in 50 overs format. New Zealand captain Crowe won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant performance by the Indian bowlers and restricted New Zealand to 221 for 9 in 50 overs. Deepak Patel was the top scorer for New Zealand with 40, John Wright made 35. For India, Chetan Sharma took 3 for 51, Mohammad Azharuddin, Ravi Shastri, Maninder Singh and Manoj Prabakhar took 1 wicket each.

Chasing the target of 222 runs to win, K Srikanth and Sunil Gavaskar added 136 runs for the opening wicket. Sunil Gavaskar 103* and Mohammad Azharuddin 41* helped India register a thumping 9 wicket win with 107 balls to spare.
