Delhi Capitals (DC) have made an interesting addition to their squad for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 by bringing in Japanese left-arm seamer Ahilya Chandel as a net bowler. This move not only highlights the growing diversity in women’s cricket but also marks a significant step for Japanese cricket on the global stage.
Who is Ahilya Chandel?
Ahilya Chandel, a 22-year-old left-arm pacer, has been an integral part of Japan’s national women’s cricket team. Born to an Indian father, cricket was always a part of her life. Her journey from playing in Sydney, Australia, to representing Japan showcases her determination and love for the game.
Since making her debut in October 2022 against Hong Kong in the Women’s East Asia Cup, Ahilya has emerged as Japan’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Women’s T20Is. She has claimed 30 wickets in 32 matches at an impressive economy rate of 4.58, making her a key player for Japan.
Historic Double Hat-Trick Feat
One of Ahilya’s biggest achievements is being among the only four women cricketers to take a double hat-trick in T20Is. The other players in this elite club include: Anuradha Doddaballapur (Germany), Shameelah Mosweu (Botswana), Thipatcha Putthawong (Thailand).
Her standout performance came against China in the Asian Cricket Council Women’s Premier Cup 2024. With bowling figures of 2.5-0-8-4, she led Japan to a four-wicket victory, earning the Player of the Match award.
How Ahilya Chandel Landed in WPL 2025
Ahilya credits her father for inspiring her cricketing journey. When he discovered that Japan had a cricket team, he encouraged her to give it a shot. Now, having played for Japan internationally, her inclusion in WPL 2025 is a major step forward.
“In my cricketing journey so far, I’ve played for Japan, and I also play my cricket way back in Sydney, Australia. I’ve been playing since I was eight years old. I got into cricket because of my dad. My dad’s an Indian, and so he passed that on to me. When he found that Japan had a cricket team, he said why not give it a go? And yeah, since 2022, I’ve made my debut, represented Japan, and now I’m here,” Chandel told in an interview with the Capitals.
As a net bowler, Ahilya will bowl in practice sessions to help prepare DC batters for upcoming matches. This role provides her with a chance to test her skills against some of the best batters in the world.
Conversation with Jemimah Rodrigues
Ahilya recently spoke with DC’s star batter Jemimah Rodrigues about her bowling. Jemimah provided valuable insights and encouragement, which helped Ahilya gain confidence in her skills.
“I actually had a conversation with Jemi. I spoke to her about my bowling since I’m here as a net bowler, and she gave me a lot of encouragement, reassuring me about my skills, which was really nice,” Chandel said.

Importance of the WPL for Emerging Cricketers
The WPL serves as a platform for young and emerging talents to gain experience, improve their skills, and learn from world-class players. Ahilya’s inclusion in DC’s setup is a testament to this growing trend. Her inclusion in the WPL draws comparisons with other rising bowlers who have transitioned from Associate Nations to global leagues. Ahilya’s left-arm seam bowling gives her a unique edge.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their WPL 2025 campaign on February 15 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. With a strong squad, they will be looking to make a deep run in the tournament.
