Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is considered to be the greatest captain in the history of the IPL, and rightly so he has won the franchise 5 titles making Mumbai Indians the most successful team of the tournament. Out of the 5 trophies, ‘The Hitman’ has picked his favorite one. He said that title they won in 2017 is on top and certainly the one he finds sweetest.
The 2017 IPL season saw Mumbai Indians win their third title. The main reason why Rohit Sharma picked this one is that he felt that going into the final MI was on the back foot. They faced Steve Smith-led Rising Pune Super Giants (RPS). MI had already been beaten by RPS thrice that year and hence they were not the favorites.
We made only 129 – Rohit Sharma
Another reason why Rohit Sharma picked 2017 is mainly that in the final, Mumbai only managed to make 129 runs and everyone thought that RPS had the game in their bag. Krunal Pandya top-scored for them with 47 runs and gave his team something to defend.
RPS certainly had the upper hand but their batsman turned out to be too slow while chasing the low score and the match ended up being a thriller which certainly was a treat for the fans. Skipper Steve Smith was the lone warrior departing for a well-fought 51.
The match ended with RPS needing 4 to win off the last ball and they only managed to run only two. Mumbai had come out of nowhere and won the game and the tournament by 1 run. They bowled tight lines to restrict their batsman and defended a total which no one thought they could.
“I would pick 2017 as we made only 129 and to defend that score on any pitch in any conditions against any opposition is a big achievement,” Sharma told India women’s cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues.
