Team India captain Virat Kohli quashed media reports on his decision to quit the T20 captaincy saying that people are trying to dig stories that don’t exist. Meanwhile, the fans were in shock after Kohli relinquished the leadership duties a couple of weeks ahead of the global T20 event.

Ever since a couple of reports have emerged stating that Kohli stepped down amid constant pressure from BCCI for not winning an ICC competition. The talismanic run-scorer has finally broken his silence over the captaincy controversy.

 Addressing a press conference on the eve of the T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan, Virat Kohli said:

“I have already explained myself a lot and I don’t think I need to harp on that anymore. Our focus is to play well in this World Cup and do what we need to do as a team. Rest people are trying to dig up things that don’t exist and I am not someone who is ever going to give fodder to that.”

Incidentally, Virat Kohli has also decided to step down as Royal Challengers Bangalore captain from the next season to focus more on his batting in the shortest format.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said he was shocked by Virat Kohli’s decision to relinquish leadership duties from the shortest format of the game after the ICC Men’s T20 World cup 2021.

Speaking on Salaam Cricket, Ganguly clarified there was no pressure from the BCCI on Virat Kohli to give up the captaincy. He also sympathized with the 32-year-old, stating that it’s difficult to captain in all three formats for such a long period.

“I was surprised (that Virat Kohli decided to step down as T20 captain). This decision must have been taken only after the England tour and it is his decision. There was no pressure from our end, we didn’t tell him anything. We don’t do things like this because I have been a player so I understand. It is very difficult to be a captain in all formats for this long,” Ganguly said. 

“I was a captain for six years, it looks good from the outside, there is respect and all that. But you get burnt out on the inside and it happens to any captain. Not just to Tendulkar or Ganguly or Dhoni or Kohli but to the captain that will come up next as well. It is a tough job,” he concluded.
