Team India will be without Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, starting later this month. While this will be a massive blow for the Men in Blue, former head coach Ravi Shastri sees it as an opportunity to find a ‘new champion’.

Bumrah, who has been in and out of the side in recent past, suffered a stress fracture and has been ruled out of the competition. After missing the Asia Cup 2022, he returned to action in the last two T20Is against Australia, but didn’t look in rhythm and eventually aggravated his injury.

While admitting the Jasprit Bumrah’s injury is unfortunate, Ravi Shastri believes it will be an opportunity for someone to stake a claim in the side. Speaking at the launch of Coaching Beyond alongside Bharat Arun and R Sridhar, he said:

“Bumrah’s injury is unfortunate. There is so much cricket being played (that) people can get injured easily. But it’s an opportunity for somebody else as there is nothing you can do with injury. With Bumrah and Jadeja not in the side, it hampers the side but also provides an opportunity to unearth a new champion.”

“We’ve a good team I think. If you can make it to the semifinals, then it could be anyone’s tournament. So the endeavour will be to start well, get to the semifinals and then you have got enough strengths there to probably win the World Cup,” he added.

“That experience counts” – Ravi Shastri on Mohammed Shami’s chances of replacing Jasprit Bumrah

India haven’t yet named a replacement for Bumrah but are waiting to hear back on the fitness of Mohammed Shami. Ravi Shastri tipped Shami as a replacement for Bumrah.

“His experience precisely. India has been there a lot in six years and he (Shami) has been an integral part of all those tours and that experience counts,” he concluded.
