A major controversy has emerged in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) after former Indian cricketer R Ashwin and his team, Dindigul Dragons, were accused of ball tampering by the Madurai Panthers. The incident reportedly took place during their match on June 14.
The Panthers officially complained to the TNPL authorities, alleging that Dindigul used chemically treated towels to make the ball heavier, which they claimed caused a metallic sound when the ball was struck. The TNPL has acknowledged the complaint and requested evidence to substantiate the claims.
TNPL Management Responds to Allegations
Prasanna, the CEO of TNPL, stated, “They have filed a complaint, which we have acknowledged. Though they have to lodge any complaints within 24 hours of the game, we have still accepted it and have asked them to furnish proof of their allegations.” He added that if the claims are backed by evidence, an independent committee will be formed to investigate the matter.
However, he warned that making accusations without adequate proof is serious and if the Panthers fail to present any evidence, they could face disciplinary action. The league has made it clear that baseless allegations against a player and a franchise will not be tolerated.
Madurai Panthers Stand Firm on Their Claim
S Mahesh, COO of Madurai Panthers, had earlier sent a detailed letter to TNPL officials, alleging persistent tampering despite several warnings. “Despite repeated warnings, the Dindigul team blatantly tampered with the ball, using towels that appeared to have been treated with chemicals,” Mahesh wrote.
In response, TNPL clarified that towels are indeed supplied by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to franchises for drying the ball due to wet field conditions—but only under the supervision of on-field umpires. Kannan, a TNPL official, pointed out that umpires regularly check the ball after boundaries, dismissals, or over breaks, and they did not find any irregularities during the match in question.
The situation now hinges on whether Madurai Panthers can present concrete evidence. If not, the franchise could face sanctions for making unverified claims. The controversy has brought unwelcome attention to the TNPL and raised questions about maintaining fairness and integrity in the league.
