Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri has compared captaincy styles of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to that of Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar respectively. Recently, Kohli was sacked from ODI captaincy and was replaced by Rohit, who was appointed as the T20I captain a couple of months back.

The move by the BCCI to replace Kohli received polarising reactions from the dividing cricketing into 2 parts fraternity, with some supporting the decision and others criticizing it. Incidentally, Virat Kohli had stepped down from India’s T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup but had stated his aim to remain as ODI and Test skipper.

But the selectors had other plans and replaced him with Rohit Sharma as captain in 50-over cricket. While speaking on Star Sports, Ravi Shastri compared the duo to former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev.

“When you look at the two and compare their captaincy, reminds me of Sunny and Kapil. Kapil the more Virat-like, spontaneous, instinctive, goes with the gut feeling; Rohit, more like Gavaskar– calculated, extremely efficient, very calm and composed”, he said.

“I don’t think the team really worried too much about what was on the outside. They were professionals,” Ravi Shastri further added.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is currently leading India in a three-match Test series against South Africa while Rohit Sharma was ruled out. The newly appointed limited-overs skipper sustained a left hamstring injury during training in Mumbai.

However, Rohit Sharma has passed his preliminary fitness test ahead of the team announcement for South Africa ODIs. Rohit will have to appear for one more fitness test before being declared fit with the team selection expected in 48 hours.
