Ravi Shastri’s coaching stint with the Indian team is coming to a close after the 2021 T20 World Cup. He took over the reins from Anil Kumble in 2017 after India’s loss in the Champions Trophy final and have had his share of highs and lows during his tenure. The BCCI has opened applications for coaching roles in different sectors and it is almost certain that Rahul Dravid will be coaching the Indian team till the 2023 World Cup after taking over from Shastri.

Meanwhile, sources close to Ravi Shastri has said that he is likely to go back to commentary after his time with the Indian team as head coach. It is very likely that he is seen as a commentator in the next IPL season in 2022 which features 10 teams in total with the inclusion of two new teams.

“He’ll be selective. He’ll be open to working with an IPL franchise. Year-round travel is something he would like to avoid now” said a source close to Ravi Shastri.

He further said that Shastri will be welcomed with open arms back in the commentary box amongst his peers. He has garnered huge respect as a commentator and has been one of the top voices in the game of cricket.

“He’ll be welcomed with a red carpet. Tell me a voice that is more identifiable than his” said the industry experts.

While the entirety of the current coaching staff are eligible to re-apply, only Vikram Rathour is likely to put his name up for selection as the rest will walk away from their posts. The former Indian cricketer had already said that the T20 World Cup would be his final assignment with the Indian team.

Rahul Dravid’s first assignment as Team India coach will be India’s home series against New Zealand which will start three days after the T20 World Cup ends. His contract will run till the end of the 50-over World Cup in 2023. His contract is reportedly worth Rs 10 crores.
