Rajasthan Royals (RR) star batter Sanju Samson has reportedly been cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) to resume wicketkeeping duties after recovering from a fractured finger. With the physios’ approval, Samson can now lead RR as captain instead of playing solely as an impact player in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Samson sustained the injury during the home T20I series against England but recovered in time for IPL 2025. Initially, he was only permitted to play as a batter, with Riyan Parag captaining RR in the first three matches and Dhruv Jurel taking over wicketkeeping duties. After RR’s victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati, Samson traveled to Bengaluru for reassessment.

As per a Times of India report, he has now fully recovered and is set to play as a full-fledged member of the squad.

“India’s T20 ‘keeper-bat and opener Sanju Samson is set to resume his captaincy and wicketkeeping duties after being cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru,” a Times of India report mentioned.

RR’s next match is against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on Saturday, April 5. The inaugural IPL champions currently sit at ninth place on the points table with two points from three games.

Sanju Samson has accumulated 99 runs across three matches in the 2025 IPL season

The RR captain moved up to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal after the squad reshuffle in the mega auction, reflecting his growing role as an opener in India’s T20 team. Sanju Samson started his IPL 2025 campaign with a brilliant 66 off 37 balls during RR’s big run chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

He then played two quickfire knocks in RR’s Guwahati-leg matches against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). So far, he has scored 99 runs in three games at a strike rate of 154.69.
