Every budding cricketers dream of playing under the leadership of the legendary cricketer MS Dhoni, and Sanju Samson is no different. The wicket-keeper batsman from Kerala lived his dream in the first warm-up match between India A and England, soon after Dhoni stepped down as limited-overs captain in early 2017.
The talented cricketer from the South earned his first national call-up during the tour of England in 2014. However, he didn’t get an opportunity to play as he had direct competition with the skipper MS Dhoni, who was also the wicket-keeper in the side.

Sanju Samson made his comeback for the Zimbabwe tour in 2015 but Dhoni wasn’t a part of the series. He made his T20I debut under the stop-gap skipper Ajinkya Rahane. The 25-year-old remained out of the national squad for the next five years and did not get a chance to play an international game under Dhoni. Samson, however, lived his dream in a practice game.
“I first shared the dressing room with him [MS Dhoni] when we went to England,” Samson said during a chat with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) social media presenter Rupha Ramani.

“I had a dream that Mahi bhai is the captain of the team. He is changing fields. I was standing in slips or something and he said, ‘Sanju waha jaa, I was in the slips when he said, ‘Sanju udhar jaa’, the youngster recalled.
Sanju Samson then had to wait for five long years to get another chance in the Indian team. In the wake of consistent runs in domestic cricket, Samson was a part of the New Zealand T20Is. He played the fourth and fifth matches of the series; however, failed to live up to the expectations. Samson will be desperate to make the most of the opportunity if any comes his way.
