Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag expressed immense pride and emotion after Rahul Soreng, son of Pulwama martyr Head Constable Vijay Soreng, was selected for the Haryana Under-19 cricket team. Rahul, who has been part of the Sehwag International School since 2019, continues to make his mark in the cricketing arena. His journey stands as a shining example of determination, courage, and the power of opportunities provided through compassion.
A Dream Taking Shape Through Sehwag’s Support
Following the tragic Pulwama attack in 2019, Sehwag had announced that his school would offer free education and full support to the children of CRPF soldiers who had laid down their lives for the nation. Rahul Soreng was one of the young beneficiaries of this noble initiative. He joined the Sehwag International School in Class 4 and is currently studying in Class 10. Over the years, he has evolved into a talented young cricketer who has already represented Haryana at the Under-14 and Under-16 levels.
Sehwag’s efforts to nurture such children have not only provided them with education but also the platform to pursue their passions. When Rahul’s selection for the U-19 team was confirmed, Sehwag couldn’t hold back his happiness and took to social media to share a heartfelt message. He wrote, “Congratulations to Rahul Soreng on being selected in the under-19 Haryana team. Since his brave father attained martyrdom in Pulwama, it has been my privilege to support Rahul, and I am extremely proud of his journey.”
From Pulwama Tragedy To A New Dawn
Rahul’s father, Head Constable Vijay Soreng, was one of the brave soldiers martyred in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. In the aftermath, Sehwag had pledged to support the education of the children of the fallen heroes. Rahul’s progress in cricket symbolises not only his individual hard work but also the success of Sehwag’s heartfelt initiative.
Last year, when Rahul was selected for the Haryana Under-16 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy, Sehwag had expressed similar joy. Sharing his happiness then, he posted, “Remember the Name- Rahul Soreng. This is one of the happiest feelings in life… I feel so privileged that Rahul Soreng, son of Pulwama Martyr Shaheed Vijay Soreng ji, who joined Sehwag International School in 2019 and has been with us for the last 4 years, has been selected in the Haryana under-16 team for the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Few things give more joy. Thank you to our great soldiers.”
An Inspirational Journey Ahead
Rahul’s journey from a young boy dealing with personal tragedy to an emerging cricketer with state-level recognition has inspired many. His achievements reflect the power of resilience and the importance of mentorship. Virendra Sehwag’s unwavering support and belief in nurturing the dreams of martyrs’ children continue to make a meaningful impact. With the Haryana U-19 call-up, Rahul Soreng stands at the threshold of a promising cricketing future — a living tribute to his father’s legacy and the values of strength and perseverance.
