Shubman Gill made an unforgettable start to his captaincy journey in Test cricket, smashing a brilliant century on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. Taking charge after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Gill impressed everyone by scoring his sixth Test hundred, and only his second outside India.
His innings not only silenced critics of his overseas form but also etched his name in the record books. At just 25 years old, he became the fourth youngest player in history to score a hundred in his debut match as captain, behind Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook, and Steve Smith.
Gill also became the 23rd cricketer ever to score a century in their first innings as a captain. Among Indian legends, he joined the elite club of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli, who all scored centuries in their first Test as captain.
Gill Urged to Lead Like Kapil Dev
Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh shared high expectations from Gill, urging him to lead with intent and set ambitious goals. Drawing comparisons with Kapil Dev’s leadership during the 1983 World Cup, Yograj emphasized that Gill should focus on scoring big and staying at the crease for as long as possible.
He revealed a recent conversation with Yuvraj Singh, who echoed the same views. “As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300,” said Yograj. He believes that if Gill performs consistently and inspires his teammates, India has a strong chance of defeating England and winning a Test series on English soil after 17 years.
A Fresh Start for Indian Test Cricket
With the retirements of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Indian cricket has entered a new chapter. The team now features young and promising talents like Shubman Gill, who are ready to carry forward the legacy.
India will also miss the experience and skills of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. The team has undergone major transitions, but this also opens opportunities for fresh energy and new strategies. With Gill leading the side and a motivated young squad behind him, India looks set to redefine its Test journey.
