Robin Uthappa commended Shubman Gill‘s leadership and batting performance during the IPL 2024 match against PBKS. After the Gujarat Titans versus Punjab Kings match, Robin Uthappa praised Shubman Gill’s captaincy during an interview with the broadcasters.
The former IPL star lauded Gill’s leadership skills and batting prowess, especially against PBKS. Gill’s guidance led GT to their fourth victory of the season, impressing many fans and experts after Hardik Pandya’s departure from the team.
Uthappa expressed his admiration for Gill’s captaincy, highlighting his rapid maturity at a young age. He noted Gill’s growth as a leader and suggested that he could lead his IPL team to success and potentially become a contender for leading the Indian cricket team in the future.
“Yeah, I think he’s a gift for Indian cricket. I think he’s someone who’s maturing into an all-time great within the Indian cricket fraternity.”
”And I think, we’ve seen him thrive, and we’re seeing him grow into a very prolific leader who is going to lead not just his IPL side, but I also think the Indian team in the near future,” said Robin as he spoke to the broadcasters.
“He wanted someone to play more aggressively towards the end”: Robin Uthappa
The two-time IPL champion also discussed Gill’s batting performance against PBKS. Gill, the opener for GT, made 35 runs off 27 balls before getting out. Uthappa considered it a fantastic innings.
He mentioned that Gill approached his innings correctly by aiming to stay at the crease throughout. However, Uthappa suggested that another player from GT should play aggressively at the other end to ease the pressure on Gill.
“Great innings. I thought he went about his innings the right way because it’s important for him to bat through the course of the innings for GT to get success, so he approached it in that fashion.”
“He needed someone to play a little bit more aggressively at the end and take off pressure from him so that he could play that,” added Uthappa as he called for aggression from the GT batters.
Uthappa remarked that Gill lost his wicket while trying to increase the scoring rate. He argued that Gill didn’t need to play aggressively, as it was Sai Sudarshan’s role to do so. Uthappa acknowledged Sai’s youth and expressed confidence in his future performances. He concluded that GT and Gill would benefit when Sudarshan bats with purpose.
“So, when he went to up the ante is when he got out. He didn’t need to do that. Sai Sudarshan could have done it. But you know, I think that Sai Sudarsan transition into upping his strike rate also will happen in due time. And when that happens, I think that combination will be great,” said Uthappa to the broadcasters.
