Sourav Ganguly backs Rohit Sharma for the opening slot in Tests

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly spoke on the inclusion of Rohit Sharma as an opener in the longest format of the game.

I had suggested earlier about trying Rohit Sharma as an opener in Test cricket and I still believe that he needs to be given an opportunity because he is too good a player to be left out in the cold”, wrote Ganguly in the sports column of The Times of India.

It is to be noted that the opening struggles continued in the Carribean tour. KL Rahul wasn”t at his best in whites for some time now. Dada pointed out that this reason could be considered for Rohit”s inclusion in the test side.

After a fantastic World Cup, I believe he will be itching to grab the opportunity to open in Tests. With Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari settling in nicely, there is not much left to play around in the middle-order. The opening still remains an area to work on. Mayank Agarwal looks good but will need a few more opportunities. His partner KL Rahul, though, has flattered to deceive and that creates an opening at the top,“, said Ganguly.

A few days ago, former cricketers spoke on behalf of Rohit and why the team management should consider the same. Mohammad Azharuddin and Gautam Gambhir expressed their liking to see Rohit as a part of the test team.

Rohit not a part of Playing XI West Indies Tests

Meanwhile, the Indian side is right at the top of the ICC World Test Championship with 120 points. But Rohit Sharma wasn”t a part of the playing XI for both the tests. Though he was included as a part of the test squad, the team management had other ideas.

With the home series of Proteas and Bangladesh not too far, will he be given a go for the longer formats? We will have to wait and see.
