BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is disappointed over the acing of WV Raman as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team. His selection was confirmed by the three-member panel including Ms Sulakshana Naik, Madan Lal and Rudra Pratap Singh. Powar replaced WV Raman, who was appointed the head coach of the India women’s team in December 2018.

During Raman’s tenure, India managed to reach the finals of the T20 World Cup 2020. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side ended up losing the summit clash against Australia. Meanwhile, Ramesh Powar’s experience as an India international and his vast experience in playing domestic cricket has helped him in getting appointed for the role.

Sourav Ganguly Unhappy With WV Raman’s Axing

Meanwhile, as per reports in Cricbuzz, Sourav Ganguly has formally expressed his reservations for the removal of WV from the coach’s role of the Indian women’s team. Ganguly did not say anything on the selection of Powar but he did, however, express surprise on how a coach, who had guided the team to the final of a global tournament, has not been retained.

Sourav Ganguly who is himself a member of the Cricket Advisory Committee said that the former India opener should have been persisted with.

Meanwhile, a BCCI official who is a well-wisher of the selection panel which confirmed Powar’s selection said that the former Indian skipper should respect the decision of the panel. 

“He should know this himself that the CAC is an independent body,” said a BCCI insider, conversant with women’s cricket.

Ramesh Powar had earlier served as the head coach of the Indian Women’s Team from July-November 2018. It was under his stint that the Indian eves qualified for the semi-final of the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup in 2018 and also won 14 T20I games in a row.

Interestingly, Powar comes back with his second stint in a coaching role with the Indian women’s team after having a fallout with former skipper Mithali Raj in 2018 which created a lot of headlines across the Indian media.

Powar’s first assignment as head coach will be on a trip to England. The Indian eves play one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is in England. The squad will fly with the men’s team on June 2, with the first of the seven games, a one-off Test match, starting in Bristol on June 16. The Test match will be the first one in seven years for the team.
