Former India captain and ex-BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly is set to make a return as President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), with no rival nominations filed ahead of the elections on September 22. He will succeed his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who currently holds the position.

This marks a homecoming for Ganguly, who previously led CAB from 2015 to 2019 before taking over as BCCI president from 2019 to 2022. His comeback is expected to inject fresh energy and renewed focus into Bengal cricket during a pivotal period.

In a statement on Sunday, CAB shared Ganguly’s appreciation and optimism about the future. He also pointed out several important upcoming events, including India’s Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and the Bengal Pro T20 League.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support. At CAB, there is no opposition. Everyone is a part of this association. We will all work together to take CAB and Bengal cricket ahead. There are important events coming up – Eden Gardens’ India’s Test match against South Africa, [matches of the men’s] T20 World Cup, Bengal Pro T20 League. I will try and do my best,” Ganguly said.

Sourav Ganguly To Manage Both Coaching And Administrative Responsibilities

As Sourav Ganguly prepares to resume his role in state cricket administration, he continues to stay active in franchise cricket. He recently took charge as head coach of the Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming SA20 Season 4, marking his first coaching stint in a T20 league.

Earlier, he served as mentor for Delhi Capitals during the 2019 IPL and later took on the role of director of cricket at JSW Sports, which owns the Capitals franchise across various leagues, including the Women’s Premier League (WPL). With multiple responsibilities on his plate, it remains to be seen how Ganguly will juggle franchise commitments alongside his upcoming duties at CAB.

Nevertheless, his return to Bengal cricket has been warmly received, with fans and officials hopeful that his leadership will drive growth at both grassroots and professional levels.
