Split Captaincy Won’t Work In Our Culture- Kapil Dev Wants Virat Kohli To Lead In All 3 Formats
Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev believes that Virat Kohli should continue to lead team India in all 3 formats. The former world-cup winning skipper is not in the approval of Rohit Sharma leading the men in blue in T20Is. Rohit as captain has a prolific record in the IPL and has guided Mumbai Indians to an incredible 5 titles.

Since the conclusion of IPL 2020, several cricket experts have denoted that India should contemplate split captaincy. The likes of Naseer Hussain, Micheal Vaughan and others maintain that Rohit can be the right man to lead India in the shortest format.

However, Kapil Dev thinks differently and opines that if Kohli is going to play T20 he should remain the captain. The former legendary cricketer also reckons that the split captaincy system will be not successful in the Indian culture. Kapil Dev also added that if Rohit leads in T20s it may lead to differences among players within the team.

“In our culture, it is not going to happen that way. In one company you make two CEOs? No. If Kohli is going to play T20s and he is good enough. Let him be there. Even though I would like to see other people coming out. But it’s difficult”, said Kapil at the HT Leadership Summit which was held online.

“Our 80 per cent, 70 per cent of the team across formats is the same team. They don’t like captains having different theory. It may bring more differences between the players who look up to the captain”, he added.

“If you have two captains, players might think he is going to be my captain in Tests. I will not annoy him’, Kapil Dev said on the debate of different captains for team India.

Meanwhile, Kohli will lead India in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Australia. But it will be intriguing to see whether the team management chooses Rohit to captain India in the last three Tests in the absence of Kohli. Rohit is currently training at National Cricket Academy to attain full fitness so that he can feature in the 4 Test match series against Australia.
