The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has added five net bowlers to the Indian squad ahead of the second T20I against Sri Lanka. The decision was taken following multiple players undergoing isolation after a positive covid case in the side.
As a result, BCCI included the five net bowlers to India’s squad for the remainder of the T20I series. The players added were Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, Sai Kishore, and Simarjeet Singh. It was also decided that the second T20I needed to be postponed from yesterday to today.
Krunal Pandya tested positive for covid-19 yesterday. Eight players along with him were sent into isolation. Although these players tested negative in their RT-PCR tests, they are unlikely to play a role in the rest of the series. According to reports, Shikhar Dhawan will continue to lead the side.
Ahead of the second T20I, speculations were rife that the series might be called off. However, an official has shut down such claims. He stated BCCI did the right thing by sending additional players as a precautionary measure.
“The decision to have extra players was a wise move and those players have now come to the team’s rescue,” he said.
The aforementioned eight players include England-bound Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav. They are expected to fly out to the UK after the conclusion of the T20I series. Whether or not these complications affect their travel is yet to be seen.
