The Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 has begun, and India are set to take on South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22. The last time these two teams met in a T20 World Cup was in the 2024 final. It was a thrilling match, and India came out on top to win the trophy.
So far, India and South Africa have faced each other seven times in T20 World Cup history. India have had the better record, winning five matches, while South Africa have won two. India’s victories came in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2024, while South Africa won in 2009 and 2022.
Going into this Super 8 match, both teams are in great form. They are unbeaten so far and finished at the top of their respective groups. With that in mind, here are three records that could be broken in today’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash.
#3 Spot for Most Sixes in an Innings Between India and South Africa in T20 World Cup
Suresh Raina and Heinrich Klaasen share the record for the most sixes in an innings by a batter in a T20 World Cup match between India and South Africa, with five sixes each.
Raina hit five sixes during his 101-run innings in Gros Islet in 2010, while Klaasen matched it with five in his 52-run blitz in the 2024 edition. With Ahmedabad expected to offer good batting conditions, this record could be broken by players from either team.
India have big hitters like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube, while South Africa can rely on power hitters such as Quinton de Kock, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, and David Miller.
#2 Spot: Biggest Team Score in a T20 World Cup India vs South Africa Game
India hold the record for the highest team total in a T20 World Cup match between them and South Africa. In the 2010 edition at Gros Islet, India scored 186/5 in 20 overs. This year, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has already seen some big scores.
South Africa scored 213/4 against Canada and 187 against Afghanistan, while India put up 193/6 against the Netherlands. With such batting-friendly conditions, India’s 186-run record is well within reach of being broken in today’s match.
#1 Most Wickets by an Indian Player in T20 World Cups
Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin holds the record for the most T20 World Cup wickets for India, taking 32 wickets in 24 matches. Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are close to matching him and could break the record in today’s match against South Africa.
Bumrah has 30 wickets from 21 games, while Arshdeep also has 30 from just 17 matches. All-rounder Hardik Pandya isn’t far behind either, with 29 wickets from 28 matches. While Bumrah or Arshdeep are the more likely candidates to set a new record today, Hardik would need an exceptional bowling performance to overtake them.
