Virat Kohli is considered to be the greatest batsman of the current generation. There is no denying the class of Kohli purely as a batsman. However, as skipper Kohli has still not been able to win an ICC trophy. He lost the 2017 champions trophy final and semifinal of the 2019 world cup as captain of the Indian team.
Former India player Gautam Gambhir has time and time again criticised the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Gambhir pointed out that cricket is a team sport and Kohli’s individual brilliance cannot win a major ICC trophy. The Indian team hasn’t won any ICC trophy since the champions trophy 2013 in England.
Skipper Virat Kohli has won nothing – Gautam Gambhir
The current India skipper took over the reins of captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017. Since then under his leadership, Indian has been consistent in bilateral series but have lost in two crucial knockout games. After winning the ODI series against Australia this year Kohli himself acknowledged the fact that the Indian team deserves to win an ICC trophy and they are chasing it.
Gambhir gave an example of Jacques Kallis, Brian Lara and compared them to Kohli. The cricketer-turned-politician said that the two legendary batsmen scored plenty of runs but never won a major trophy. Kohli so far as a skipper has not won anything and still needs to achieve a lot.
“It is a team sport. You can keep scoring your own runs. There are people like Brian Lara who have scored so many runs. There are people like Jacques Kallis who have won nothing. Virat Kohli at the moment has won nothing, to be honest as a leader. He has a lot to achieve”.
“You can keep scoring those big runs but according to me, till you win those big trophies you will never be able to fulfil your entire career’, said Gambhir Stars Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’.
The next big assignment for Virat Kohli and team India will be the T20 over T20 world cup in Australia. The world cup is scheduled to be played in September-October later this year but the future of the event is still uncertain. Kohli will be looking forward to getting the monkey off his back and win his first ICC trophy as captain of India.
