Former Test skipper Virat Kohli showered praise on current captain Shubman Gill for his extraordinary showing in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Gill showcased his brilliance with the bat by smashing a monumental double century in the first innings, scoring 269 off 387 deliveries, which included 30 boundaries and 3 sixes.
He followed it up with another outstanding effort in the second innings, notching up 161 runs off just 162 balls, studded with 13 fours and 8 sixes. His remarkable twin centuries not only powered India’s dominance but also helped him etch his name in the record books. Impressed by Gill’s commanding performance in both innings, Kohli took to Instagram to commend the young skipper, sharing a story to applaud his efforts.
“Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this,” Kohli wrote on his story.
Shubman Gill Scripts Record As Only Third Indian Captain With Twin Hundreds In A Test
After notching up a double century in the first innings and a century in the second, Shubman Gill etched his name in the history books by becoming only the third Indian captain to score twin hundreds in a single Test match. He now joins a prestigious group featuring Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.
Gavaskar was the pioneer, achieving the feat with scores of 107 and an unbeaten 182 against the West Indies in Kolkata back in 1987. Kohli followed years later with scores of 115 and 141 in the 2014 Adelaide Test against Australia. Gill also became only the second Indian after Gavaskar to score a double century and a century in the same Test.
On a global scale, Gill is now only the ninth player in Test cricket history to accomplish this rare feat. His form has been exceptional, and his captaincy tenure could not have started on a better note. Notably, he had also scored a century in the first innings of the opening Test of the series, highlighting his consistency and dream start as India’s Test skipper.
