On Monday, May 12, fans took to social media to express their reactions after former India captain Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

The 36-year-old, set to play in the upcoming Test series in England, retired after India’s 3-1 loss in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His decision followed Rohit Sharma’s retirement on May 7, and Ravichandran Ashwin also retired from Test cricket after the third Test in Brisbane.

The Delhi batter concludes his Test career as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer, behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar, having accumulated 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85. His tally includes 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.

Virat Kohli remains the most successful Test captain in India’s history, with 40 wins in 68 matches, including 11 draws. Fans on X praised Kohli for his remarkable Test career, though many expressed their sadness over his retirement.

“My Test career will always bring me joy when I look back”- Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli shared a message announcing his retirement from Test cricket, captioning his Instagram post:

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.”

“As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off,” he added.
