The teams selected for the upcoming tour of the West Indies, particularly the Test team, have drawn criticism from Wasim Jaffer, a former India opener.
Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Priyank Panchal were passed over when choosing the red-ball team, which he questioned. The fact that Ruturaj Gaikwad had jumped the line also caught his attention.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India revealed the Test and ODI teams for the multi-format tour of the West Indies on Friday, June 23.
Sarfaraz continued to be overlooked while Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar received their first Test team calls. Easwaran and Panchal, two successful domestic openers, also didn’t get the nod.
Jaffer made the following observations about the West Indies tour team that India had selected in a post on Twitter:
“Why do we need four openers (Rohit, Shubman Gill, Gaikwad, and Jaiswal)? They could have instead selected Sarfaraz as a fifth middle order bat to honor his dependable domestic performances. ”
The national legend: also criticized the selection of Gaikwad over a few other openers with more experience.
“Easwaran and Panchal have been pounding on Test doors for a very long time in Ranji and India A. “How did Ruturaj jump the line? Is it true that because they don’t participate in the IPL, they are out of sight and out of mind?
Jaffer also expressed surprise at the selection committee’s choice to rest veteran pacer Mohammed Shami. The formerly opening batsman believes that the fast bowler gets better each time out.
“I was surprised to see Shami rested, especially after taking a month off. He seems to be the sort of bowler who gets better, fitter, and in better shape as he bowls more. ”
After performing poorly in the World Test Championship final, Umesh Yadav was dropped, Shami was given a break, and Navdeep Saini was given a test recall.
