Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh made an early impact in the first T20I against England at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, dismissing Phil Salt cheaply. The match marks the opening game of a five-match series. Team India faced a slight dilemma over their new-ball combination.

Arshdeep was a certainty, sharing the responsibility with skipper Hardik Pandya. Nitish Kumar Reddy, returning to the XI after last featuring against Bangladesh in October 2024, was included as the third seamer.

Arshdeep began his spell confidently, striking Salt on the thigh guard with his opening delivery. After a wide, Salt pushed the next ball towards covers. On the third delivery, Arshdeep shortened his length, tempting Salt to go for the pull. The batter mistimed his shot, producing a top edge that wicketkeeper Sanju Samson caught with ease.

Phil Salt departed for a three-ball duck, making way for Jos Buttler at the crease. Buttler, who announced yesterday that he would bat at No. 3 and forgo wicketkeeping duties, stepped in to steady the innings.

England Stumble: Two Down in Powerplay in 1st T20I vs India

India won the toss and chose to bat first in the 2025 T20I against England at Kolkata. Arshdeep Singh, opening the bowling for India, made an immediate impact, claiming two wickets in the powerplay.

He first sent Phil Salt packing for a duck (0 off 3 balls), before removing Ben Duckett for just 4 runs (4 off 4 balls). With those quick wickets, England found themselves in trouble, at just 17/2 after the first three overs.

At the crease now are England’s captain Jos Buttler and Harry Brook, who will be looking to rebuild the innings. They will need to stabilize things and look for opportunities to counterattack, aiming to get the England score moving in the right direction against the Indian bowlers.
