On Day 3 (Saturday, January 25) of Punjab’s Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in Bengaluru, captain Shubman Gill played a key role with the bat. The right-handed batter made a solid 102 runs from 171 balls, featuring three sixes and 14 boundaries. He reached his second fifty in just 50 balls.
After scoring his century, Gill removed his helmet, raised his bat, and acknowledged the cheers from teammates and spectators, though he refrained from his usual bowing gesture during the celebration. You can watch the video here:
A much needed century for Shubman Gill here vs Karnataka. Gets a double from 98. His switch in gear post his fifty was commendable from 50 off 119 to 100 off 159.

Shubman Gill’s knock marked his return to form after a modest four runs from eight balls in the first innings. The 25-year-old had a tough time in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, accumulating only 93 runs across five innings without a single half-century.
The Punjab batter hasn’t scored a half-century in away Tests since his 110 against Bangladesh in December 2022, though he did register a century against the same team at home last September.
“Gill is the vice-captain”– Harbhajan Singh explains why Shubman Gill will surpass Yashasvi Jaiswal in the ICC 2025 Champions Trophy
Harbhajan Singh recently explained why Shubman Gill is the preferred choice to open in the upcoming ICC 2025 Champions Trophy, sharing his thoughts on his YouTube channel (via Cric Today):
“Everyone wanted to see Jaiswal’s selection. They also want to see him in the playing XI but that is going to be difficult, considering the fact that Gill is the vice-captain and he will open.”
“By any chance, if the management decides to open with Yashasvi, Gill will have to be pushed to No.3 and Virat Kohli to No.4. This will leave no place for Shreyas Iyer, making the batting line-up look awkward. I feel Yashasvi should play as he is in form, and a player deserves a chance when he is scoring runs. But now Gill being the vice-captain, he can’t be dropped,” he added.
