Dindigul Dragons (DD) skipper Ravichandran Ashwin couldn’t contain his emotions as Varun Chakaravarthy pulled off a dramatic finish against the Salem Spartans (SS) in Match 19 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025. The high-stakes clash took place on Sunday, June 22, at the Indian Cement Company Ground in Tirunelveli.
Chasing a target of 189, DD needed 10 runs from the final three deliveries with just two wickets remaining. Varun Chakaravarthy, batting on 1, faced M Poiyamozhi. He managed two runs off the fourth ball, followed by a no-ball for an off-the-pitch delivery.
Taking full advantage, Chakaravarthy smashed the free-hit for six over long-on, bringing the requirement down to one run off the last ball. Under immense pressure, the 33-year-old then lofted the final delivery over long-off for a boundary, sealing a thrilling victory.

Varun Chakaravarthy stayed unbeaten on 13 from just five balls to finish the match in style. Earlier, skipper R. Ashwin provided a crucial late flourish, scoring a rapid 36 off 14 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes.
The Dragons’ innings was also boosted by key contributions from Shivam Singh (34 off 24), R K Jayant (25 off 15), Hunny Saini (35 off 28), and Vimal Khumar (24 off 15), all of whom played important roles in guiding the team to their third victory of the season.
Ashwin Shines With 3/22 In First Innings Of TNPL Clash
After being asked to bat first, the Salem Spartans found themselves in early trouble, losing three wickets for just 40 runs. Nidhish Rajagopal steadied the innings with a determined knock, scoring a crucial 74 off 47 balls, laced with six boundaries and four sixes.
Supporting cameos from Sunny Sandhu (25 off 14) and Rajendran Vivek (35 off 20) helped lift the total to a competitive 188/7. For the Dindigul Dragons, captain Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a standout performance with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs in his full four-over quota.
