India registered its first medal on the tally at the Tokyo Olympics on Day 1, when weightlifter Mirabai Chanu scripted history by clinching silver in the women’s 49 kg event. She became the first Indian weightlifter to win a medal at the Olympics, after Karnam Malleshwari, who achieved this feat in 2000.

Mirabai spoke to India today’s Rahul Rawat after the victory. She said, “Finally it has happened, I got the silver medal… 5 years of hard work has borne fruit. I am very happy, I don’t have words. I want to say thank you to all my supporters – coach, family, weightlifting federation of India.”
