Shubman Gill has begun his preparations for the Ranji Trophy as part of the Punjab squad for their sixth-round clash against Karnataka. The top-order batter was seen fine-tuning his skills at a practice session held at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali.
Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Singh, was present at the venue to support the 25-year-old. A viral video on social media shows Gill delivering powerful strokes in the nets, earning praise from his coach for his impressive shots.
The BCCI has mandated that international cricketers participate in domestic tournaments, prompting several Indian team members to turn their attention to the Ranji Trophy. Shubman Gill, who hasn’t played in the competition since 2022, last appeared in a quarter-final match against Madhya Pradesh in Alur.
Gill struggled to perform in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After missing the opening Test against Australia due to a thumb injury, he featured in the remaining three matches but managed to score only 93 runs as India lost the series 3-1.
Gill struggled with the bat, managing a highest score of 31 and an underwhelming average of 18.60. He will look to rediscover his form before the Champions Trophy, set to commence in February. Prior to the ICC tournament, India is set to host England for a white-ball series. The squad for the five T20Is has already been announced by the selectors.

Gill expected to feature in three-match ODI series against England
Gill is likely to take part in the three-match ODI series against England, which will serve as India’s final preparation before the Champions Trophy. His last outing in the format was against Sri Lanka in August last year.
Returning to the Ranji Trophy, Gill has the chance to train under Punjab coach Wasim Jaffer, the all-time leading run-scorer in India’s domestic red-ball competition. In 60 first-class matches, Gill has amassed 4,481 runs at an impressive average of 47.16, including 13 centuries and 19 fifties.
Gill will aim to deliver his best performance when Punjab faces Karnataka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on January 23.
