Mushfiqur Rahim faced dismissal for obstructing the field on Day 1 of the second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Dhaka’s Shere Bangla Stadium on Wednesday, December 6.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, who had a promising innings with 35 runs off 83 balls, featuring one six and three boundaries, saw an unfortunate end to his commendable performance due to a lapse in judgment.

For those unaware, Rahim’s exit occurred in the 41st over of Bangladesh’s innings. Kyle Jamieson delivered a length ball, which Rahim defended on the back foot, causing the ball to move away from the off-stump.

The right-handed batsman, feeling uncertain, thought the ball might hit the stumps. In attempting to halt the ball with his hands, he obstructed the field, leading to his dismissal.

It’s against the rules for a batsman to touch the ball with their hands while it’s still in play. Following the incident, a frustrated Bangladeshi fan signaled Rahim’s dismissal in the stands ahead of the umpires’ decision.

What does the rule mean?

Acc to Law 37.1 of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC):

“37.1.1 Either batter is out obstructing the field if, and while the ball is in play, he/she wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action. See also Law 34 (Hit the ball twice). This Law will apply whether or not No ball is called.”

Mushfiqur Rahim’s Bangladesh is having a tough time during Tea on the first day

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat on Wednesday. However, the home team consistently lost wickets. At Tea, Bangladesh’s score was 149 for 8 after 58 overs, with Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam batting.

Besides Rahim, Mushfiqur Ragum and Mehidy Hasan contributed with scores of 31 (102) and 20 (42), respectively. Mitchell Santner took three wickets for the Kiwis, while Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips each claimed two.

Bangladesh holds a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series after securing a 150-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test.
