Winning World Cup Is Not The Epitome Of Success; Virat Kohli Doing A Great Job – Kapil Dev

1983 World Cup-winning side led by Kapil Dev changed the landscape of Indian cricket forever. The side defied all the odds to beat West Indies and script history. The former India skipper Kapil Dev recently said that the present team is currently doing well and there is no pressure on Virat Kohli to lead the team to a World Cup trophy.

Meanwhile, there is a lot of comparisons going around with Kohli, not in the league of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. Incidentally, Dhoni became the second skipper when he led India to the World Cup title in 2011. He is also the only captain to win three ICC titles.

But Kapil Dev believes there is no pressure on Virat Kohli. Stating that winning the World Cup is not everything, Kapil stressed on the importance of Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Gavaskar as skipper.

“There is no pressure on the current Indian team, in my opinion, they are doing well, it’s not like that you need to win a World Cup to be called a good team,” he told ANI.

“Virat Kohli is doing well, Sourav Ganguly did well, how can we forget Sunil Gavaskar? He was a great captain too. Lifting the cup is not everything, how you shape up the team matters,” Dev added.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli led India to the finals of the Champions Trophy in 2017 where they lost to arch-rivals Pakistan. In the 2019 World Cup, the Men in Blues lost to New Zealand in a rain-marred semifinal encounter.

Despite that, he enjoys a stellar record as a captain with an excellent win percentage. With a couple of global series lined-up in the next few years, Virat Kohli will have the chance to enter the league of World Cup-winning captains.
