Indian T20I team defeated Ireland by seven wickets in the first T20I match at Dublin in Ireland. India successfully chased down the target of 109 runs set by the Ireland team. Left-handed opener Ishan Kishan provided a great start to the Indian team in the run chase against Ireland. Former England spinner Graeme Swann had some good words to say for Ishan Kishan.

Swann believes that Ishan Kishan would be wanting to make his place as first choice opener for the T20 World Cup in Australia this year. He wouldn’t want to settle as a backup opener. Swann also praised Ishan Kishan for his consistency at international level so far.

Graeme Swann on Sony Sports said, “His (Ishan Kishan’s) target is to be the opener in the World Cup. There’s no player I know who wants to get there as backup. His stats speak for themselves. It’s interesting that he’s had such a good time at the international level, didn’t have a good IPL by his standards.”

Ishan Kishan smashed 26 runs off 11 balls in the first T20I against Ireland. He smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes in his innings. He made full use of the powerplay. Ishan was also in great form in the T20I series against South Africa. Kishan scored 206 runs in 5 innings at an impressive strike rate of 150 against South Africa.

Further in the conversation, Graeme Swann said that Ishan Kishan wouldn’t want to settle as backup opener. He would want to get in as No1 choice. “There will be no way now that he will be thinking ‘I’m not the backup’ he would be saying “I wanna get in there as the No.1 choice,” the former England spinner added.

“Things keep changing in couple of months” – Ajay Jadeja on combination of Indian team

T20 WC 2022 in Australia is going to be a very crucial tournament for the Indian T20I team. They haven’t won a T20 WC since 2007. Indian team under Rohit Sharma would be looking to win the T20 WC this year. It would be interesting to see which opening combination India would prefer. Ajay Jadeja feels that Ishan has a great opportunity to seal the opening position.

Ajay Jadeja said, “With the Indian cricket team I keep saying it, things change in a couple of months. You bring in something special to the team and suddenly you start putting pressure on the existing players. Ishan Kishan has the best opportunity as the openers get the best spot to bat in T20s.”
