Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar expressed that Ajinkya Rahane has a point to prove in the World Test Championship final against Australia, which will take place from June 7 to June 11 at The Oval in London. The veteran batter is making his comeback to the Indian test team in the upcoming fixture.

Ajinkya Rahane last played a Test for India in 2022 against South Africa in Cape Town. He was dropped from the team following his poor form. The right-handed batter went back to domestic cricket and had a decent season for the Mumbai team. He scored 634 runs at an average of 57.63, with two centuries, including a double-hundred. With Shreyas Iyer ruled out due to injury, the selectors turned to the experienced Ajinkya Rahane.

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed that Ajinkya Rahane will be crucial for Team India in the final. Speaking on Star Sports show Follow the Blues, he said,

“He’s got a lot of experience having played in England, having scored runs in England. So, yes, I think he is going to be crucial down at number 5. And yes, I do believe he has a point to prove, I still feel he has got plenty of cricket left in him, and this is a wonderful opportunity for him.”

Hope he will be able to grab this opportunity: Sunil Gavaskar on Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane has represented Team India in 82 test matches, scoring 4931 runs at an average of 38.52. He has twelve centuries and twenty-five fifties to his name. The batter is known for his gutsy knocks in dire situations. Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar hopes that Ajinkya Rahane grabs the opportunity in the World Test Championship final, and does well for the team.

“I’m hoping he will be able to grab this opportunity with all the experience that he has and make a place for him back in the Indian team,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

Ajinkya Rahane left for England on Tuesday, May 30 after the conclusion of the 2023 Indian Premier League. He played a vital role for the franchise in their fifth title win. The right-handed batter scored 326 runs at a strike rate of 172.48, with two fifties. He will be keen to continue his form in the World Test Championship final against Australia.
