David Warner, who was reduced to one in the second innings of the World Test Championship final on Friday, came under increasing pressure from Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar made his remarks after Australia’s David Warner was dismissed for one run in the second innings of the World Test Championship final on June 9 at the Oval in London.
After entering the batting order alongside Usman Khawaja in the second session of Day 3’s play with Australia holding a commanding 173-run lead, David Warner found it difficult to get going.
David Warner poked at a delivery outside the off-stump to fall for one just as there was a chance to get loose and apply pressure to the Indian pacers.
In the first four overs of the third innings of the WTC 2023 final, Mohammed Siraj struck and took the crucial wicket of the left-handed opener, giving India hope of mounting a comeback.
Mohammed Siraj, who kept angling the ball away from the left-hander, did a fantastic job of positioning David Warner. Warner poked at one before KS Bharat made a nice catch because he was powerless to stop himself.
“It appears as though he set him up. The first few pitches went past Warner’s outside edge, giving the Australian batter some cause for concern. Then, without really moving his feet, Warner poked the ball at the delivery. And Bharat made a good low-angle catch,” Gavaskar said to Star Sports.
He continued, “Warner’s indifferent form continued, there will be a question mark over his place for the Ashes series.”
Warner fought valiantly during the opening innings of the World Test Championship championship match, doing a great job of fending off the threat of the new ball while scoring a 60-ball 43.
On a cloudy morning, Warner was essential for India, who won the toss and decided to field at the Oval. Usman Khawaja left Australia early, but Warner worked with Marnus Labuschagne to withstand a strong spell from Mohammed Shami and Siraj.
Notably, despite the senior opener going through a rough patch, Warner received the support of head coach Andrew McDonald for the Ashes. Although the left-hander has lacked consistency, he hit a double hundred in his 100th Test.
Before the WTC final, McDonald told Sen, “We’re optimistic with what Dave’s got left.”
“We selected him for the squad and believe that he will play a really important role in the Ashes and the World Test Championship final. He’s on the plane for that reason, the man continued.”
