India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly criticized the use of roadshows following the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory celebrations in Bengaluru. The former Indian opener emphasized that public safety should always come first and suggested that the celebrations could have been held privately instead.

RCB’s first IPL title in 18 years sparked huge excitement in Bengaluru, but celebrations turned tragic with 11 deaths and 33 injuries. Before the England tour, Gautam Gambhir expressed deep sorrow and condolences for the victims, according to The Indian Express.

“I was never a believer that we need to have roadshows. When I was playing, I had the same statement to make – that we should not have roadshows. Lives of the people are far more important.”

”We can be a little bit aware of not holding these kind of roadshows. Can probably have it closed door or in a stadium. It is very tragic what happened yesterday. My heart goes out to the people who lost their loved ones.”

After falling short in the finals of 2009, 2011, and 2016, the Bengaluru-based team finally triumphed by defeating the Punjab Kings by six runs. Krunal Pandya was named Player of the Match for his impressive bowling performance of 4 overs, 17 runs, and 2 wickets, helping RCB successfully defend a total of 190.

The 43-year-old also emphasized that people’s lives must never be put at risk. He stated that the event should not have proceeded if the authorities were unable to manage such a large crowd. He further added:

“I am no one to hold anyone responsible. Important thing is, I never believed in road shows. Winning and celebrations are important but what is more important is someone’s life.”

”If we are not prepared to handle that kind of crowd then might as well not having these road shows. We are responsible citizens of this country and we need to show that in all of our actions.”
