Aakash Chopra deems KKR should use Pat Cummins as a strike force upfront with the new ball. All eyes are on Cummins when KKR plays in IPL as the franchise acquired him for a whopping Rs. 15.5 Crores in the IPL auction.
KKR wasn’t able to extract the best out of Cummins in the last season as he went to the cleaners in the end overs. Ahead of IPL 2021, popular commentator and analyst Aakash Chopra has given suggestions to KKR on how to utilise Cummins so that he wins matches with the ball.
Pat Cummins Is Not A Gun Death Bowler- Aakash Chopra
Further, Chopra recommended that the best way to get the best out of Cummins is to use him with the new ball and break the back of the opposition in the first powerplay itself. As Cummins has a tendency to bowl a lot of length deliveries, Chopra feels that he should not be given the task to contain the batting from the 16-20 over.
“He is not your gun death bowler so that admission is important, to begin with that even though we have paid him 15.5 crores and by his own admission the ball doesn’t start swinging a lot more because you have been paid that kind of sum. So his job is to just make the new ball talk, take a couple of wickets at the top and break the back of the opposition’s batting in the first six overs”, said Chopra during a discussion on Star Sports.
“He has got bounce, he has got pace, he has got the ability to move the ball sideways after pitching but those attributes are great when the ball is new. So this is how you need to use Pat Cummins and allow somebody else to actually flourish at the backend of a T20 innings”, he added.
Meanwhile, Chopra thinks that KKR could also use Cummins’ batting to good effect as he can hit a long ball down the order. KKR play their first match of IPL 2021 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 11th at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
