Jake Weatherald has made a powerful statement to the Australian selectors with a sensational innings of 183 for Australia A in Darwin. The 30-year-old left-handed opener has been in tremendous form and is now being widely discussed as a potential candidate for the national Test side.
Following a standout Sheffield Shield season where he ended as the highest run-scorer, Weatherald’s consistent performances have strengthened his chances of breaking into the senior squad. Over the past year, he has accumulated 1143 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 57.15, including four centuries. This string of performances comes at a crucial time, with Australia still unsettled in their search for a stable opening pair in the longest format.
Eyeing a Baggy Green in the Upcoming Ashes
Australia’s Test team is gearing up for a high-profile Ashes series against England later this year, and Jake Weatherald’s name is now among the top contenders for an opening slot. With Usman Khawaja and Sam Konstas not performing at their best, selectors are reportedly considering other options, and Weatherald has seized the opportunity. After his recent 183 off 275 balls in the Australia A match, he opened up about his aspirations.
“Of course as a batter you’re trying to put yourself forward to play for Australia. That’s why we’re here. It’s why you play domestic cricket. Making runs is your best currency to getting higher honours so it’s a good opportunity to make big scores and thankfully I made one today. It’s just how it is. Making scores get you higher honours,” he told . His clear ambition and recent form are making it difficult to ignore him when squad decisions are made.
“I’m Ready To Go”, Confident and Prepared for the Big Stage
Jake Weatherald understands that consistent runs bring recognition and he believes his efforts are finally paying off. “If you keep making runs, of course you’re going to get noticed more – and I’ve done that. Obviously there’s some great candidates there as well, and they’ve earned their right to be there.”
“So to be amongst them is a pretty proud moment. But I’m batting well, and I think I’m ready to go if it comes to that moment,” he stated. Despite the Australia A vs Sri Lanka A match ending in a draw, Weatherald’s performance stood out. Now, he sets his sights on the upcoming Sheffield Shield matches for Tasmania and two key four-day fixtures during the India A tour in Lucknow this September, where he will be tested in subcontinental conditions.
